What is the connection between language and identity? How do people use and perceive language? What do we say about ourselves through the language choices we make?
These are just a few of the questions we will discuss in this one semester course at the Santa Rosa Junior College. This course is an examination of the major areas of Sociolinguistics including Multilingualism, Language Contact, Language Variation, and Discourse Analysis with a focus on ASL and other signing communities in the world. You will get a strong theoretical foundation and a broad range of practical exercises and activities that explore the various dimensions of the sociolinguistics of Deaf communities. It is designed to guide aspiring and practicing interpreters toward a clearer understanding of the sociolinguistic factors affecting Deaf communities and sign languages.
Taught by Michele Bishop, PhD Linguistics
