Dear Friends, Family and Community members,

We would like to invite you all to participate with us and MC Bob Daniels at NorCal

When there is a severe budget crisis in our state we know that the first services to be cut are those that impact programs that serve people with disabilities. When we are faced with these challenges we must be creative in ways to keep services open to our community.

What a better way to raise funds for a good cause than by sharing a meal together, entertainment and most of all, beautiful artwork made by and donated by all members from our deaf community. Artwork has been arriving to our office for the past 2 weeks and I am impressed and awed by the creative and artistic talents of our community. Some coming from as far away as Arizona and southern California.

Come to Par-Tay!! You will be surprised, entertained as well as enjoy good food, beautiful art and NorCal

We look forward to seeing you ALL there!!

2003 RID Journal of Interpretation
Dennis Cokely and Jennifer (Hawkins) McLean

This article is a pilot study that I created when I was in my BS program at Northeastern University under the teachings of Dennis Cokely.

After having been in the recent workshop by Ari-Asha and Ric Owen, I find it a good opportunity to bring this article to your attention for your reading pleasure.

There has been a lot of talk about teaming lately. What is it, why do we do it, how do we do it, when do we do it? The topic was brought up during the workshop “Recommitting to the Journey” by Ari-Asha Castallia and Ric Owen. Strengthening the relationship with your team … talk about how you work, what you need when you team, and how you request support when teaming. The only way you can “talk” about your work … is if you “know” how you work.

This pilot study examines the functioning of teams of interpreters and analyzes those behaviors that team members use to request support. The study not only presents a taxonomy of behaviors actually used by interpreters to request support but also demonstrates that there is a discrepancy between those behaviors that interpreters state they will use when asking for support and those behaviors that they actually use.

It is an interesting read. Pictures help to illustrate what people “say” they will do (lean, tilt their head, gaze of the eyes) when they need a feed from their team while working. But, the discrepancy lies in the “what they DO do” when needing support. Was the eye gaze seen by the team? How can the team see your eyes, if you are sitting next to each other? Was the lean from the shoulders or from the hips? Is the team sitting close enough to feel / see the “lean”? A tap on the knee … is your team ticklish? Sensitive to being touched? Sitting in a comfortable position to tap you?

I hope you have the 2003 Journal of Interpretation available to you. If you do not, you can go to the following website and purchase the JOI. (https://www.rid.org/acct-app/index.cfm?action=store.main)

Eaton Interpreting Services has been asked to spread the word for the CAL-ED 2010 50th Conference happening in Sacramento, CA. California Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, CAL-ED, is the largest professional organization in the west with approximately 500 registered members. This organization is composed of educators, parents, teacher trainers, interpreters, support staff, professionals, and other persons who are dedicated to the pursuit of educational excellence for Deaf and hard of hearing children. The CAL-ED organization was established in 1960.

The objective of CAL-ED is to support quality education of students who are Deaf or hard of hearing by providing a network of support and information for teachers of students who are Deaf or hard of hearing. CAL-ED’s philosophy is to not endorse any one particular methodology or idea. Yearly conferences, alternating between Northern and Southern California, take place. Conferences draw speakers and session leaders not only from California, but from all over the United States. These people cover a wide spectrum of topics through which we can learn and grow. Topics include, but are not limited to, new methods, procedures, ideas, and technologies.

As their theme indicates, Deaf and Hard of Hearing students are supported by a village of providers including: parents, DHH teachers, general education teachers, educational interpreters, advocates, counselors, psychologists, friends, family, administrators, early intervention specialists, occupational therapists, curriculum specialists, researchers, audiologists, speech therapists, the student, and many more.

CAL-ED is looking for presenters. If you are interested in presenting at the March 12 – 14, 2010 conference, submit a proposal to http://cal-ed.org/conferences/it-takes-a-village/proposals/ no later than November 15, 2009. Receipt of electronic proposals will be confirmed within one week of submission. Proposal documents will be blind reviewed. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by December 15, 2009.
