The California Department of Education would like to invite you to send profiles of your outstanding deaf high school students for us to highlight during our Deaf Awareness Week celebration, September 20-24, 2010.

The purpose of highlighting students during the week is to bring awareness to our employees about the accomplishments of deaf students. There are many deaf students in California who are doing things to enhance their lives and the lives of others, without allowing being deaf to hinder their success. We want to showcase those students.

Therefore, we need a few students to highlight. We would like a brief description about the student including his or her accomplishments, goals, and activities, and any other information that sets him or her apart from other students. We would also like to include a photo. Please submit this information to me, via e-mail no later than September 13.

Click here to find a parent permission and release form. This will need to be mailed to the address below, as we will need the original signature.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you for your commitment to our celebration.

CSUS will be hosting interpreter workshops on April 10, 2010. Please hold the date for yourself, mentees, students, or other professionals.

Similar to the grant that brought Peter Cook to town, CSUS has been awarded another grant to bring Windell “Wink” Smith Jr., the CEO of Project N.A.D.I.N.E (similar to our NorCal but in OKC) to Sacramento. Windall will be hosting a CODA performance on April 9th including both a free performance for all CSUS students and an evening performance on April 9 for the general public. CSUS will be selling tickets to the public performance.

Currently, the plan is to have two workshops on Saturday. The first workshop will focus on Idioms and the second one will focus on the NIC. Windall is working on securing RID CEUS for both workshops now.

I know it is a long ways away, but just thought you might like to know and maybe plan ahead :0)

San Francisco—The multiple-award-winning Health Care Interpreter Certificate Program, a City College of San Francisco and Kaiser Permanente community education partnership, celebrates 13 years of training qualified interpreters and advocating for the reduction of linguistic disparities in health care.

City College will honor its newest graduates on May 16 at the main campus cafeteria with an extended graduation-anniversary ceremony starting at 11 a.m. Since 1997, over 600 health care interpreters have graduated from the local program and many of them are now serving non/limited-English speaking communities throughout the bay area. These multicultural professionals represent a wide diversity of languages including Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Mongolian, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, Amharic and Tigrinya.

The need for well-trained linguistically and culturally competent health care interpreters continues to grow as immigrant populations also grow. In SF, nearly half of the population speaks a language other than English, and many of them are non- or limited-English speakers. In Alameda and Contra Costa counties respectively, nearly one-third and one-fourth of the population speaks languages other than English.

While the training program now offers a new career path to students with multicultural and multilingual skills, the fundamental objective of providing language access to ensure quality and equitable health care has become more relevant than ever before. Federal, state and independent regulatory agencies are increasingly requiring health care providers to offer interpreting services to patients with non-/limited-English proficiency.

“The importance of ensuring equitable, patient-centered, and safe care has been our motivation all along,” said Gayle Tang, Kaiser Permanente Senior Director of National Linguistic & Diversity Infrastructure, and cofounder of the Health Care Interpreter Certificate Program.

The program has been recognized through two recent awards that Kaiser Permanente received for innovation and community leadership. These awards by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and the America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) validate the work of the trained professionals who facilitate communication between patients and their English-speaking health care providers.

Today, May 1, International Workers Day is celebrated in most every country. As attestation of the program’s multiculturalism, we issue this press release on this special day of remembrance throughout the world. Happy International Workers Day!
